Encounters and Insights: Building Cultural Bridges in Business
Q: What initially sparked the inspiration, and how did you conceive the startup idea?
A: Nexus Alliance was developed with a lot of evolution and insight, more so with my experience as a Singaporean entrepreneur for over 11 years at the very center of China’s tech rise. Imagine me pre-installing applications like Google Search, Yahoo Search, Bing Search, Amazon, Facebook and many more into smart phones most likely Xiaomi, Huawei, as well as OPPO that are to be shipped out around the globe.
However, amid such success, I also found a yawning void, a deep-seated one in fact. I refer to the gap that exists for the rest of the world who loves China’s technological wonders and the business environment within it, doing business in such a country. Even with over 20 years sales and business development experience across Asia, China is a different ball game altogether. This epiphany was a welcome addition to my intrinsic desire of bringing people together and creating avenues for young driven people to take advantage of.
Q: What was the “aha” moment that led to your startup idea?
A: Many ordinary days passed in a seemingly mundane course of work at the Guangdong office but one day the eureka moment happened. The Nanyang Polytechnic students from Singapore had come on a short visit and their young faces expressed wonder at the technology in China yet bitterness in their longing for the business that was going on in China. I saw in their eager questions and the excitement of being in the foreign land, a little bit, a foreigner like myself who had traveled to understand the intricate aspects of doing business in China. At that moment, everything clicked: how about, I thought, if we could build a bridge, not only for students but to anyone wishing to cross the great sea of Chinese business?
Q: Were there any serendipitous encounters or events that inspired your idea?
A: Every so often, the universe conspires in your favor which in my case was a wave of requests from businessmen and companies asking for my support in China. These requests began modestly as a few of them included translation of partnership proposals or searching for the right partners and later transformed to more complex, business translation issues. I was no longer restricted to translations of words because I was now an interpreter of cultural meanings.
Here is a scenario where a Canadian Chief Executive Officer hits a snag when it comes to understanding business relationships characterized by the term “guanxi” or a German engineer who cannot quite understand why his no-nonsense negotiation or persuasive techniques seems to be ineffective in this part of the world. These encounters expanded my perceptions towards a bigger picture. This is when it dawned on me that the number of years that I had practiced was not only an asset to me, but rather a potential source of support for so many others who were seeking to engage in business with China.
Q: Can you describe the process of refining and clarifying your initial idea?
A: Forging the Nexus Alliance was akin to fitting the jigsaw pieces of an intricate puzzle. We spent weeks on end conducting rigorous market analysis and stayed late in several brainstorming sessions. The eureka moment occurred when we came up with an idea to build an ecosystem with students, alumni, and businesses at the center of it.
Picture a scenario where a student is on a study tour in China while at the same time a small business owner is on the hunt for a suitable local partner — all of which is made possible with the understanding of the culture. This insight led to Nexus Alliance, transforming it from a simple service to a complex system that incorporates experience, business matching, cultural navigation, and more.
Q: How does your startup idea align with your passions and values?
A: I didn’t start this executive course on a whim, and Nexus Alliance isn’t just a business I run. Every time I observe an eyeful student or a businessman who comprehends the intricacies of the Chinese business etiquette, or witness a non-Chinese entrepreneur managing to enter the first business alliance with the Chinese counterpart, I know exactly the purpose of the journeys I undertake.
Our programs are not only teaching pure language or organizing a few industry tours. They are about providing the next generation of globally minded leaders who will function successfully in the most accessible and yet challenging of markets. Facilitating a cross-cultural business deal is much more than finding the right words. It is the process of making understanding between people that can be effective even beyond the professional engagement.
Going from a person who installs a mobile software onto someone to a person who also builds cross-cultural and cross-business bridges was not such an easy transformation, however it turned out to be so fulfilling. The story of Nexus Alliance is about how we bend without breaking, navigate through cultures with purpose, and most importantly, why sometimes it is great to try and join the seemingly opposite ends of the spectrum.
A Journey Beyond Borders: Building Connections with Purpose
As Nexus Alliance forges a bridge between cultures, it reflects Thomas Hoon’s personal journey from a startup pioneer to a global mentor and connector. For Thomas, helping others succeed in China is more than business—it’s a mission to demystify the market, foster genuine connections, and empower entrepreneurs to face challenges with confidence. Through Nexus Alliance, Thomas Hoon envisions a new generation of business leaders equipped with the insights and skills needed to succeed in a globalized world.
With each entrepreneur he mentors, Thomas is reinforcing the belief that business is more than transactions; it’s about understanding people, building trust, and opening doors to collaboration across cultures. This journey of resilience and purpose underscores an essential truth: that every connection, no matter how culturally different, brings us closer to understanding—and thriving within—the world’s fastest-growing markets.
