Shaping Digital Marketing Leaders

Q: What do you love most about your job after more than a decade?

A: After a decade of training and teaching in Singapore and Myanmar, I’ve come to cherish the unique blend of challenges and rewards that my job offers. What I love most is the opportunity to witness firsthand the transformative power of learning.

In Singapore, I’ve had the privilege of working with diverse individuals from various backgrounds, helping them develop their skills and reach their full potential. The satisfaction of seeing someone’s confidence grow and their career trajectory take off is truly fulfilling.

In Myanmar, I’ve had the unique experience of serving as an adjunct MBA faculty member, teaching digital marketing at three prestigious business schools in Geneva, London, and Zurich. This role has allowed me to share my expertise with a global audience and contribute to the development of future business leaders.

Beyond the personal and professional growth, I’ve experienced and had the chance to foster a strong community of trainers who share my passion for education.

Q: Can you describe how a typical day at work has evolved over the years?

A: Over the years, my typical day at work has evolved significantly, reflecting the changing training and education landscape. When I first started, my days were primarily focused on delivering face-to-face training sessions.

With the rise of technology, my role has become increasingly dynamic. I now incorporate online learning platforms, virtual classrooms, and digital tools into my training programs. This has allowed me to reach a wider learner and offer more flexible learning options. Additionally, I’ve become more involved in designing and updating training content, ensuring it aligns with the latest industry trends and best practices.

While the delivery methods have changed, my core commitment to helping learners achieve their goals has remained constant. I still enjoy the satisfaction of seeing learners grow and succeed, but now I have the added benefit of leveraging technology to make a greater impact.

Q: What initially inspired you to pursue this career, and has that inspiration changed over the years?

A: My initial inspiration to pursue a business in training came from a deep-seated desire to help others. I’ve always been passionate about sharing knowledge and empowering individuals to reach their full potential. Witnessing the positive impact that education can have on people’s lives has been a constant source of motivation.

As I’ve gained more experience and witnessed the challenges people face in today’s rapidly changing world, I’ve become even more committed to providing them with the skills and tools they need to succeed. Knowing that I’m making a difference in people’s lives is gratifying.

One memory that stands out was when I worked with Aidha, a non-profit organization that empowers migrant domestic workers and lower-income women in Singapore. I trained them to transform their lives through sustainable wealth creation.

Seeing the positive impact of these trainings on the lives of the women was truly inspiring. They gained new skills, increased their confidence, and improved their financial situations. Their stories of resilience and determination reinforced my belief in the power of education to change lives.

I’ve also found great satisfaction in mentoring and developing the next generation of trainers. Sharing my knowledge and experience with others and helping them to grow in their careers is a truly rewarding endeavour.

Overall, my business in training has been incredibly fulfilling. I’ve had the opportunity to work with people from all walks of life and make a tangible difference in their lives. I’m grateful for the challenges and rewards that this career has brought me, and I look forward to continuing to grow and learn in the years to come.

Q: What has been your most memorable job experience, and how has it shaped your career?

A: One of my most memorable experiences was leading a training program for a digital marketing agency in Yangon. The company was facing significant challenges, and its employees were struggling to adapt to the rapidly changing business environment. I worked closely with the management team to develop a customized training program that addressed their needs.

The program was a resounding success, and I was thrilled to see its positive impact on the employees’ performance and morale. This experience reinforced my belief in the power of training to drive organizational growth and success. It also taught me the importance of tailoring training programs to meet the unique needs of each client.

Q: What skills or qualities are essential for long-term success in your field?

A: To be successful in the field of training, it’s essential to possess a combination of skills and qualities. First and foremost, strong interpersonal skills are crucial for building relationships with clients, learners, and colleagues. Communicating effectively, listening attentively, and empathizing with others is essential for creating a positive and supportive learning environment.

Additionally, adaptability and a commitment to upskilling and reskilling are key in a rapidly evolving field like training. The ability to embrace new technologies, learn from mistakes, and stay updated with industry trends is essential for long-term success. Finally, a passion for lifelong learning is indispensable. As a trainer, it’s important to continuously develop your skills and knowledge to provide the best possible instruction to your learners and meet the ever-changing market demands.

Q: How do you handle challenges or difficult situations at work, and have your strategies changed over time?

A: Handling challenges and difficult situations is an inevitable part of working in the training field. Over the years, I’ve developed several strategies to navigate these obstacles effectively.

One of my primary approaches is to maintain a positive and solution-oriented mindset. When faced with a challenge, I try to view it as an opportunity for growth and learning. By focusing on finding solutions rather than dwelling on the problem, I can stay proactive and maintain a sense of control.

Another important strategy is to build strong relationships with my clients and learners. By fostering open communication and trust, I’m able to address concerns and resolve issues more effectively. When people feel valued and understood, they are more likely to be receptive to feedback and willing to work together toward a solution.

I’ve learned the importance of continuously upskilling and reskilling to stay ahead of the curve. By staying informed about industry trends and best practices, I’m better equipped to handle challenges and provide relevant training programs.

As my business has progressed, my strategies for handling challenges have evolved. Initially, I relied heavily on my own experience and intuition. I’ve come to recognize the value of seeking advice from colleagues, mentors, and industry experts. By leveraging the collective wisdom of others, I’ve been able to develop more effective strategies and approach challenges with greater confidence.”

Q: What is the most rewarding part of your job now, compared to when you first started?

A: I found the most rewarding aspect to be the immediate gratification of seeing learners grasp new concepts and apply them successfully. I’ve gained more experience and taken on more responsibilities; my perspective has evolved.

The most rewarding part of my job is witnessing the long-term impact that training can have on individuals and organizations. I’ve had the privilege of working with countless learners who have achieved great things in their careers. Knowing I’ve played a small part in their success is incredibly fulfilling.

Additionally, I find great satisfaction in mentoring and developing the next generation of trainers. Sharing my knowledge and experience with others and helping them to grow in their careers is a truly rewarding endeavour.

Q: How do you stay motivated and engaged in your work after so many years?

A: Staying motivated and engaged in my work after so many years requires a combination of intrinsic and extrinsic factors. Intrinsically, I’m driven by a deep-seated passion for learning and development. Seeing my learners grow and succeed is incredibly rewarding, and it keeps me motivated to continue doing what I love.

Additionally, I find it essential to stay curious and continually learn new things. By keeping up to date with industry trends and best practices, I’m able to remain relevant and effective in my role. This constant learning also helps to prevent burnout and keep my work fresh and exciting.

Extrinsically, I’m motivated by the opportunity to positively impact the world. Knowing that my work is helping individuals and organizations to succeed is a powerful source of motivation.

To maintain my motivation and engagement, I also prioritize work-life balance. By taking time for myself to relax, recharge, and pursue my interests outside of work, I’m able to come back to my job feeling refreshed and ready to tackle new challenges.

Finally, I believe setting goals and celebrating my achievements is important. By setting clear objectives and tracking my progress, I’m able to stay focused and motivated. Celebrating my successes, both big and small, helps to reinforce my sense of accomplishment and keeps me motivated to continue striving for excellence.

Q: What advice would you give someone considering a career in your field, especially for the long haul?

A: If you’re considering a career in training, I would encourage you to reflect on your own passions and values. This field is incredibly rewarding, but it requires a genuine commitment to lifelong learning and a desire to positively impact others.

One of the most important pieces of advice I can give is to build a strong foundation of knowledge and skills. This includes staying current with industry trends, developing your instructional design skills, and mastering various training methodologies. Consider pursuing certifications or advanced degrees to enhance your credibility and expertise.

Additionally, cultivate strong interpersonal skills. Effective communication, empathy, and building relationships are essential for success in training. Practice active listening, provide constructive feedback, and create a supportive and inclusive learning environment.

Networking is another valuable skill to develop. Attend industry conferences, join professional organizations, and connect with other trainers. Building relationships with colleagues can provide collaboration, mentorship, and professional growth opportunities.

Finally, be prepared for a dynamic and ever-evolving field. The training landscape is constantly changing, so it’s important to be adaptable and open to new challenges. Embrace technology, experiment with different approaches, and be willing to learn from your mistakes.

Q: How have you balanced your work with your personal life over the years, and has your approach changed?

A: Balancing work and personal life has always been challenging, especially as my business has progressed. In the early years, I often prioritized work over everything else. I was driven to succeed, and I believed I needed to work long hours to achieve my goals.

I realized that this approach was unsustainable and detrimental to my overall well-being. Since then, I have prioritized self-care, spent more time with loved ones, and taken breaks from work. I have learned that setting boundaries and establishing a healthy work-life balance is essential.

One strategy that has helped me maintain a balance is effective time management. By prioritizing tasks, setting deadlines, and delegating responsibilities when possible, I’m able to be more efficient and productive, leaving me more time for my personal life.

Another important strategy is communicating openly with my stakeholders about my availability and priorities. By setting clear expectations, I avoid feeling overwhelmed and ensure I have the time I need.

Finally, I’ve learnt the importance of taking regular breaks and vacations. These opportunities to rest, recharge, and disconnect from work are essential for maintaining my mental and physical health. By prioritizing self-care, I can return to work feeling refreshed and motivated.

My approach to balancing work and personal life has evolved over the years, and I continue to refine my strategies as my circumstances change. However, the core principles remain the same: effective time management, open communication, and self-care are essential for maintaining a healthy and fulfilling life.
