I began writing blogs about career related topics and personal development. (I was in HR previously.)  My goal was to share valuable knowledge and establish myself as an expert in the field. I consistently published content that resonated with professionals and educators alike, addressing their pain points and offering actionable solutions. My blogs quickly gained traction and the readership grew exponentially. And before long, I started receiving enquiries from companies and educational institutions who had discovered my work online.

These opportunities turned into a steady stream of clients, and my consultancy began to thrive. My personal brand, built on a foundation of consistent, high-quality content, had not only opened doors but also positioned me as a sought-after expert in the training industry. This experience taught me the power of leveraging personal strengths to create a brand that truly stands out.

A: The biggest challenge has been convincing people of the long-term value of personal branding. Back in the earlier days, the perception of personal branding was seen as something only celebrities or big global brands needed. Many professionals, especially early in their careers, did not realize how vital personal branding was. They viewed it as a “nice to have” accessory rather than a necessity.

The breakthrough came when I could showcase the tangible results my clients were achieving – from career advancements, being headhunted, increased visibility to new business opportunities.

Another challenge has been staying adaptable, especially in a constantly changing digital world. I overcame this by continuously refining my programs, incorporating tools like AI, digital storytelling and gamification to keep the training relevant and impactful. This ability to stay ahead of trends while maintaining the essence of personal branding has been key to overcoming these hurdles.

A: Technology has been a game changer. It has allowed me to scale my offerings and engage with clients in more dynamic ways. For instance, both Google and LinkedIn have become essential platforms for personal branding, and I leverage them extensively in my training programs. Additionally, I use AI tools to help clients craft more targeted and authentic brand messages, while video content creation has allowed for greater storytelling and engagement.

A: One of the most defining moments in my career was when I received an email from an Australian law firm in 2018 requesting personal branding training. To be honest, when I first saw the email, I thought it was a scam. Why would the lawyers from the firm in Australia fly all the way to Singapore to learn from me, an Asian guy from this little red dot on the map? Australia, after all, has no shortage of personal branding experts.

Curiosity piqued, I responded, and it turned out to be completely legitimate. They were genuinely interested in learning my approach. When four Aussie lawyers actually flew over, and we met in person for the session, I had the opportunity to see firsthand the transformative power of personal branding.

It wasn’t just about the technicalities of presenting yourself – it was about how deeply a tailored, authentic brand could resonate across cultures and industries.

This moment reinforced for me that personal branding transcends geography or background. It’s about understanding your unique value, and when you do that, people will seek you out, no matter where you are. This moment marked a shift in my business and solidified my belief in the universal impact of strong personal branding. And after that experience, I never looked back. Since then, I have been heavily involved in helping clients craft their personal brands with confidence and purpose.

A: Networking is about building genuine relationships, not just exchanging business cards. I approach networking as an opportunity to listen, learn and share insights. Every industry has its own language and challenges, and I make it a point to understand those before jumping into solutions. I also stay visible by sharing knowledge – through LinkedIn posts, workshops and speaking engagements – which helps people understand my value before we even meet.

My advice is simple: Be authentic, offer value before you expect anything in return and stay consistent. Networking isn’t about immediate gains; it’s about nurturing relationships over time.
