“Start With AI” Might Be the Worst Advice for Omani Businesses

For Hatef Mohammad Ali, AI isn’t just about deploying tools, it’s about building a future where local talent and businesses are empowered to thrive.

With a career at the intersection of strategy and engineering, he brings a unique perspective to how artificial intelligence can be integrated into Oman’s Vision 2040 and beyond.

In this Q&A, Hatef shares how AI is already making a difference, the misconceptions he works to break down, and why building strong data foundations is the first step for any business leader.

Where AI is Already Moving the Needle

Q: You’ve made it a mission to align your AI consulting work with Oman Vision 2040. From what you’ve seen so far, where is AI already making the biggest impact in Oman’s business ecosystem?

A: While advancements in logistics and government services are notable, I believe the biggest impact is the rapid upskilling of our local talent and the burgeoning startup ecosystem.

Vision 2040 is fundamentally about building a knowledge-based economy, and the government’s push for AI has spurred investment in education and training programs. We’re seeing a new generation of Omani data scientists and AI specialists.

Initiatives that support AI-focused tech startups are fostering a vibrant ecosystem where innovative, locally developed AI solutions for sectors like finance, tourism, and aquaculture are beginning to emerge.

This human capital development is the most sustainable and impactful outcome so far.

Breaking Down AI Misconceptions

Q: In building and deploying AI solutions for local companies, what are the most common misconceptions you encounter about AI’s role in transformation?

A: The most common misconception is viewing AI as a “plug-and-play” solution that will instantly solve all business problems.

Many leaders believe they can purchase an AI tool and it will work like magic, without understanding that AI requires quality data, clear objectives, and integration into existing workflows. AI is not just an IT project; it’s a strategic transformation.

It needs a solid data foundation and, more importantly, a cultural shift where employees are trained and empowered to use these new tools. True transformation comes from combining AI’s analytical power with human expertise and insight.

From Strategy to Execution

Q: You work at the intersection of strategy and engineering — how do you ensure AI tools like LangChain and n8n aren’t just impressive tech, but actually solving real business problems in Oman?

A: It all starts with the “why” before the “how.” My background in Industrial Engineering taught me to always begin with process analysis.

Before we even discuss tools like LangChain for building language applications or n8n for workflow automation, we map out the client’s existing processes and identify the most critical bottlenecks and pain points. Is it slow customer response times? Inefficient data entry?

We quantify the problem first. Only then do we design a solution, ensuring the technology is precisely tailored to solve that specific, quantified business problem, delivering a clear return on investment.

Gaps and Opportunities Ahead

Q: You’ve recently moved to Muscat to contribute directly to the country’s tech evolution. What gaps or opportunities do you see for AI to accelerate progress in sectors like logistics, real estate, or government services?

A: A significant gap I see is in the sustainable management of resources, which is critical for Oman’s future.

In real estate and urban planning, AI can be used to design smart cities that optimize energy and water consumption. In the logistics sector, it can create greener supply chains by optimizing fuel consumption and reducing empty miles for trucking fleets.

For government services, AI can enhance environmental monitoring and support data-driven policymaking on climate change.

Focusing AI on sustainability not only drives economic progress but also aligns perfectly with the long-term vision of a prosperous and sustainable Oman.

Start with Data, Not AI

Q: You mentioned writing about how AI is transforming Oman — what’s the one insight or message you most want business leaders here to understand as they prepare for this shift?

A: My key message is: start with your data, not with the AI. The most sophisticated algorithm will fail with poor quality or siloed data.

Business leaders need to prioritize building a robust data infrastructure and a culture of data governance. Before you invest in a complex AI platform, invest in unifying your data, ensuring its accuracy, and making it accessible.

A clean, well-organized dataset is the fuel for any successful AI initiative, and getting this foundation right is the most critical first step.

Final Thoughts: Empowering Businesses Through AI

For Hatef, the most meaningful achievement isn’t just delivering projects — it’s empowering local companies to build their own capabilities. His mission is to democratize access to AI so that Omani businesses can innovate and thrive in the digital age.

One recent example reflects this perfectly: working with a construction and design company, he and his team automated the workflow for creating interior and exterior moodboards. What once took several days now takes just one minute — enabling sales teams to present designs instantly during consultations and significantly boosting customer acquisition.

Moments like these — when a hesitant client becomes confident in using AI — represent the milestones that matter most to him. They capture not only the value of AI, but the essence of why Hatef Mohammad Ali is one to watch in Oman’s tech evolution.
